This document describes variables in three scientific investigations:
1) A study of transformer output based on primary and secondary coil turns which identified independent discrete and continuous variables and dependent continuous and categorical variables.
2) A study of cress seed germination based on water pH which identified control, independent continuous, and dependent continuous and categorical variables.
3) A study of concrete strength based on cement percentage which identified an independent continuous variable and dependent discrete variable.

1. ISA The nature and type of variables in investigation skills assessments. 28 January 2011
3. A student obtained these results while doing an investigation to determine the possible link between the number of primary and secondary turns and the output voltage and power output of a transformer.
15. Dependent variable this one is a categoric variable its value is described in words.
16. A student obtained these results while doing an investigation to determine the possible link between the pH (acidity) of water used on germinating cress seeds and their growth and colour.
27. A student obtained these results while doing an investigation to determine the strength of a concrete block as the percentage cement in the mix varies.
28. What type of variable is shown in this column?
29. Independent variable This is also a continuous variable any value of cement could be taken
30. What type of variable is shown in this column?
31. Dependent variable The value is discrete because only multiples of 10N were available
