John Lee Beatty is a scenic designer who has designed sets for over 172 plays on Broadway and elsewhere since 1973, working mostly on productions on the East Coast like New York City and Washington D.C. as well as some in London. He attended Brown University as an English major and trained under renowned designers Ming Cho Lee and Jo Mielziner, starting his career as an assistant to Douglas Schmidt before winning his first Tony Award for his set design for the play Knock Knock in 1976, going on to win 9 Tony Awards total for his work in theater design.
