Early societies practiced self-sufficiency, with each person producing only what they needed. As specialization and trade developed, people focused on specific goods and exchanged with one another, increasing productivity. Money later emerged to facilitate trade, with receipts serving as a standardized form of exchange. Supply and demand determined prices, with prices rising when demand increased for a good like potatoes and falling when additional supply became available. However, the assumption of economic equilibrium ignores real-world inequality, as some have greater capabilities, resources, and control that allow them to earn more than others through higher productivity and demand for their goods and services.
