This document defines and provides examples of common figures of speech: simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, onomatopoeia, and alliteration. A simile directly compares two unlike things using "like" or "as". A metaphor states something is something else to emphasize a quality. Personification gives human traits to non-human objects. Hyperbole exaggerates to emphasize an idea or action. Onomatopoeia uses words that imitate sounds. Alliteration repeats the same initial sound in words close together.
