Kenny Burrell was born in Detroit in 1931 and picked up guitar at age 12. By 17 he was a respected member of the Detroit jazz community. He joined Dizzy Gillespie's sextet in 1951 while at Wayne State University and toured with Oscar Peterson after graduating in 1955. He moved to New York in 1956 where he made his first album which received a four star review.
