The kidney is composed of an outer cortex and inner medulla. The basic functional unit of the kidney is the nephron, which contains the renal corpuscle and renal tubule. The renal corpuscle is located in the cortex and consists of the glomerulus and Bowman's capsule. The renal tubule contains the proximal convoluted tubule, loop of Henle, and distal convoluted tubule. The medulla contains only straight tubules like the loop of Henle and collecting ducts.
3. Introduction:
Kidneys are paired structures functioning
in filtration of blood.
Mostly bean shaped in all species.
Divided into renal cortex and medulla.
Outside covered with thick connective
tissue called Capsule.
8. Nephron:
Basic functional unit of kidney.
Has 2 main portions:
Renal corpuscle:
i.Glomerulus
ii.Bowmans capsule
Renal tubule:
i.Proximal convoluted tubule
ii.Loop of Henle
iii.Distal convoluted tubule
10. Renal Cortex:
Outer-dark red portion
Divides into:
Cortical labyrinth(pars convoluta)
Medullary rays(pars radiata)
Composed of both straight tubules and
convoluted tubules.
Renal corpuscle is present only in renal
cortex.
PCT and DCT are also present.
11. Renal corpuscle:
It consists of
Glomerulus
Bowmans capsule
Additionally, present things are:
Mesangium
Macula densa
12. PCT and DCT:
PCT contains brush borders while DCT
dont have any brush borders.
So thats an important point in their
identification.
14. Renal Medulla:
Inner lighter-colored portion
Only contains straight tubules (Loop of
Henle and Collecting ducts)
Loop of Henle = simple squamous Ep.
Collecting ducts = Simple columnar Ep.
