KoA-OLA Gives Back!
by John Louise A. Guevara
The most beautiful season of the year has come once again. Christmas trees with
decorations all over them can be seen in almost every house in the town. Gifts wrapped in
glossy red and green papers designed with bells, stars, and holiday greetings are placed
under these Christmas trees. Flashing lights are on every building’s facade at night. Peo-
ple at the same time start their count down from 100 to the day of Christmas itself.
Moreover, in every home we see an image of the nativity scene most often on the
altar with a spotlight on the baby in the manger. During the preparation period, candles on
advent wreath are being lightened. In every church, families attend nine consecutive days
of Misa de Gallo that begin either on the night of December 15 or the dawn of December
16. In addition, in our country there are a lot who do outreach programs, Christmas cele-
brations with the poor, and charity works whole year round but most especially during this
season of thanksgiving, sharing, and of loving.
This year, we decided to do the same thing. Giving back most probably is the best
thing to do to feel and let others feel the true spirit of Christmas the same way. Christmas
is about Christ and Christ is about love.
Last December 27, Saturday, the Knights of the Altar of the Diocesan Shrine and
Parish of Our Lady of the Abandoned held an outreach Christmas party for its members
and for the young members of the Xander community in Daang-Bakal Brgy. Sto. Niño,
Marikina City. Weeks before, we decided to plan the said event aiming to give back the
blessings we had and we continuously have individually and as an organization. For the
young men, the sacristans of OLA, the best way to do such is to make their fellow youth in
the community mostly the ones who also serve God through the church happy even in the
most simple and smallest ways. School supplies, toys, and bags of grocery items for their
families were given making sure that each of them had his or her own simple present this
Christmas. Games which everyone enjoyed filled the place (Mary, Mother of God Chapel)
with laughter. All of us had indeed a great time.
The outreach christmas party was made possible through the initiative of KOA Pres-
ident Romeo Victorino and through the help of the current organization officers. It’s suc-
cess was also because of the generosity and heartfelt support and love of the following
people in this endeavour: Parish Administrator and Vice-Rector Rev. Fr. Reynante Tolenti-
no, Adviser Bro. Jose Ramos, KOA members and their parents.
Being an organisation, a family, that serves God through active participation in the
church, we believe that Christ is the reason of Christmas and it is love for Him and for one
another that matters most in this celebration.
