Daniel Hale Williams was an African American surgeon who performed the first successful open-heart surgery in the United States in 1893. He founded Provident Hospital in Chicago, one of the first hospitals run by and for African Americans. Williams was a pioneer in the medical field who overcame racial barriers and helped advance surgical techniques through his groundbreaking operations and leadership in establishing Provident Hospital.
