Intemtem or Tupig is a popular
native delicacy from Pangasinan which is
made out of ground glutinous rice and
coconuts strips wrapped in banana leaves
then cooked over charcoal. During the old
days this rice cake was served only during
Christmas and New Year. It was also
believed that it was given commonly to
carolers during Christmas like sweet treats
given on trick or treats in the West. Then in
the 1960s it started to become
commercially popular and the rest was
history. Now you see them everywhere
from the streets to the fresh markets and
specialty shops, new types of flavours have
been created like jackfruit, pandan,
strawberry, purple yam (ube) and guava to
name some.

Kabang (Visayan for "Spotty") is a shepherd
mix Askal from Zamboanga City, Philippines, who became
internationally famous and was described as a "hero dog" when
she rescued two children from a potentially
fatal motorcycle crash.
Kabang, a two-year-old shepherd mix,
lost her snout and upper jaw and was left
with a gaping wound on her face after
reportedly jumping in front of a speeding motorcycle in
Zambonga last December 2011, saving the lives of her owners
daughter and niece who were on the path of the oncoming
motorcycle.
In October 2012, Kabang was brought to University of
California, Davis where she underwent procedures to remove two
upper teeth, reconstruct one eyelid, and eventually close her
facial wound with skin flaps.
Over $27,000 were raised by international donors for
Kabang's treatment and surgery at UC, Davis.
"She's as normal as she can be. She doesn't need any special
medication. So aside from the aesthetic, she's normal."
But he said Kabang is still traumatized. "Pag may dumaan na
motor, natatakot siya," Lim said.
