The document discusses the Kikuyu Escarpment Payment for Water Ecosystem Services Initiative in Kenya. The Kikuyu Escarpment Forest Reserve provides important ecosystem services like water supply, ecotourism, biodiversity, and resources for local communities. However, the forest is facing increasing degradation from fuelwood collection, overgrazing, farming, and pollution. This is reducing water flows and quality, damaging habitats, and causing conflicts over water. The initiative aims to establish partnerships between stakeholders like the forest service, county government, and communities to promote conservation activities, sustainable farming, and private-public partnerships for payments for ecosystem services to address these issues. The Igunga Ecovillage Project in Tanzania aims to build resilience to climate change among 6,000 vulnerable households in 10 villages. The project, running from 2015-2019, focuses on community learning through farmer field schools, participatory climate-smart village planning, and supporting policymaking. It transforms landscapes through activities like water retention, agroforestry and livestock management. It also transforms livelihoods by enhancing skills in sustainable agriculture, water reuse, and soil management to increase incomes, food security, and empower women. PERMAGOV analysis of governance arrangements shows that the availability of knowledge is an essential enabler for seabed governance. Missing knowledge about the locations and extent of benthic habitat types, impacts of bottom trawling, cumulative impacts of activities, and the recovery potential of habitats hamper seabed governance.
