Michael was born in 1943 in St. Albans, Hertfordshire. During World War II, he was evacuated from his family and sent to a boarding school in Cumberland that he hated, which later inspired his novel Butterfly Lion. Michael went on to become a primary school teacher after studying French and English in school. He enjoys telling stories and now lives on a farm in Devon that he brings city children to visit.
