Andy is unmotivated to learn due to a lack of support from his parents and an unsuitable teaching style from his teacher. His parents are unable to help with schoolwork because his father works long hours and his mother has a limited education. His teacher uses an old teaching style, neglects new methods, and does not engage or care about students. Andy also lacks role models, as his peers are more focused on playing than learning.
