LECTURE 12: Using role play in the classroom
Uber task
Read the two articles on Uber. You are also encouraged to find other sources
of information to support your case. You are now required to role play the
following scenario. You will be given today¡¯s lesson to prepare and the role play
will
be conducted in your next lecture. Once the role play has been done we will move
on to how to best assess this role play.
? A Commission of inquiry has been established to better understand the role of
Uber drivers on the economy.
? There are several key players represented on the commission. These are as
follows:
? Uber drivers from JhB;
? Meter taxi owners/drivers from Jhb;
? Town planners; Environmentalists
? Uber customers; and,
? Government officials from the Department of Transport and the
Department of Economic Development.
? Each group of role players must respond to and address the
following key issues:
1. Indicate the constituency they represent.
2. Introduce their main argument.
3. Provide an assessment on the following:
? Pricing of Uber compared to meter taxis
? Impact on employment
? Impact on consumers
? Impact of protest and unrest by meter taxi owners
? Efficiency gains for the economy and local
infrastructure
1. Consolidate their main argument in a conclusion.
