After Tom Sherak and Jennifer Lawrence announced the list of the Oscar
Nominations 2012, people raved. The list was considerably short and lacked names
of other deserving personalities. However, finding Gary Oldman on the list implies
the body is on top of its game again. Gary Oldman, who had been snubbed for his
role of the notorious Sid Vicious, and for other notable roles, receives his first-ever
nomination which he should have obtained two decades ago.
While the Oscars snubbed his artistry for several occasions, Gary Oldmans ongoing
baldness cannot play hide-and-seek anymore. Guess, Gary Oldman is becoming
what his last name says he is. Yes, Oldman now belongs to nearly half of the worlds
adult population that suffers from a condition called androgenetic alopecia or male
pattern baldness. Androgenetic alopecia affects nearly 70 per cent of men by age 35
and 85 per cent by age 50.
The term androgenetic alopecia refers to two contexts. Androgenetic is
derived from the theory that this condition is caused by the combination
of the genetics and androgens. Alopecia is the Greek term for hair loss of
    any type.
Androgenetic alopecia is otherwise known as pattern baldness. The
condition tends to run in the family in the vast majority of cases. This
genetic tendency will signal the hair follicles in the scalp to produce the
enzyme 5-alpha reductase (5-AR). 5-AR enzyme has the main duty to act
upon testosterone to convert it into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Because
of the genetic link, certain follicles are sensitive to DHT which is why DHT
is known to cause pattern hair loss.
In some cases, however, the genetic link is non-existent. Some patients
have no family history of baldness. Likewise, there are cases wherein
only the parents are bald and the offspring are not despite the fact that
the condition is polygenic in inheritance.
Because it is not a disease, there is no cure for
AA. Fortunately, there is a wide range of
options to treat it. There are medications
such as minoxidil and finasteride that may
pose long-lasting side effects although may
be effective. There is also laser hair
restoration therapy that is notable for its
safety. In severe cases of hair loss, surgical
treatments are perhaps the only option.
