I designed this digital artefact as a workshop tool to stimulate multi-stakeholder discussions on the meaning and
purpose of Financing for Development in light of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
I wanted to create a single, striking image that illustrated the interconnectedness of the 17 SDGs (in their own
colours), financing instruments (in light blue) and sources of finance (in dark blue), while also conveying the concept
of ‘leverage’ (gearing).
The machine works (I think!), but it is not the only way to assemble the gears. Workshop participants would be
encouraged to re-assemble the machine to reflect different funding strategies and produce different development
outcomes according to national, regional or global priorities.
