Physical education has a long history dating back to ancient China, Egypt, Greece and Rome where it was part of military training. In the 19th century, many European countries adopted gymnastics and built gymnasiums. Both World Wars showed that American soldiers were out of shape, prompting increased P.E. requirements in schools. However, recessions in the 1970s and 1980s led to cutbacks in P.E. as schools spent less time on it due to economic pressures. Today, fighting child obesity is important but promoting P.E. in schools remains challenging due to limited school funding.
