This document summarizes the key points from a book about the Kamaiya movement in Nepal to liberate bonded laborers. It discusses how (1) the Kamaiya system enslaved generations of Tharus through debt bondage, (2) a liberation movement emerged in the late 1990s with support from civil society groups, political parties, and the media to abolish the system, and (3) while the Kamaiya were declared free in 2000, rehabilitation efforts faced many challenges and Kamaiya rights are still not fully secured. The book aims to document lessons learned to inform future rights-based development work.
This document discusses consensus decision-making and provides extracts from various sources on the topic. It begins with a definition of consensus as a process for group decision-making where all participants' input is gathered and synthesized to reach an agreement acceptable to all. It then provides extracts from an ACT UP manual describing consensus and comparing it to voting. Further extracts from the book "On Conflict and Consensus" discuss how consensus creates a cooperative dynamic rather than a competitive one, how proposals are handled, and how consensus works best in an atmosphere where conflict is supported and resolved cooperatively. The document advocates for consensus as the least violent form of decision-making.

A christian response to the right to educationOpenSpace
油
The document discusses the historical role of Christianity in promoting education and sharing of knowledge. It notes that Christianity helped democratize knowledge by translating the Bible and other texts into local languages and establishing schools. This opened up education beyond the elite. However, over time Christian schools lost their focus on values and came to mirror mainstream exclusionary practices. The RTE Act is seen as another opportunity to continue Christianity's pioneering role in promoting inclusion and universal access to education.

Violence against women garment workers, gender subordination in IndiaOpenSpace
油
Violence against women workers in industries like garment manufacturing is rooted in gender inequality and power imbalances. Women face multi-layered risks as they are often migrants, from oppressed backgrounds, and the sole breadwinners for their families. They comprise 90% of factory workers but less than 5% of supervisors or managers. Low wages that are barely above minimum wage, long work hours, strict attendance policies, and lack of job security or benefits compound the exploitation women face. Unions that could advocate for better conditions are discouraged by factories. Comprehensive reforms are needed across government, industry, and civil society to establish fair wages, rights to organize, and mechanisms to prevent and address gender-based violence in the workplace.
