2. WHAT IS POVERTY?
• Poverty is the state of one who lacks a
certain amount of material possessions or
money.
• Absolute poverty or destitution refers to the
one who lacks basic human needs, which
commonly includes clean and fresh water,
nutrition, health care, education, clothing
and shelter.
• About 1.7 billion people are estimated to
live in absolute poverty today.
4. History of Muhammad Yunus
• In 1976, during visits to the poorest households in the village
of Jobra near Chittagong University, Yunus discovered that
very small loans could make a disproportionate difference to
a poor person.
• His first loan, consisting of US$27.00 from his own pocket,
was made to 42 women in the village
• Yunus finally succeeded in securing a loan from the
government Janata Bank to lend it to the poor in Jobra in
December 1976.
• The institution continued to operate by securing loans from
other banks for its projects. By 1982, the bank had 28,000
members. On 1 October 1983 the pilot project began
operations as a full-fledged bank and was renamed the
Grameen Bank (Village Bank) to make loans to poor
Bangladeshis.
5. MUHAMMAD YUNUS
• He is a famous social entrepreneur that want
to help eliminate poverty.
• He is a Bangladesh economist from
Chittagong University.
• He was the third of fourteen children whom
of five died in infancy. His best influence was
his mother, Sufia Khatun, whom helped any
poor who knocked their door to ask for help.
• He was committed to the eradication of
poverty.
6. MUHAMMAD YUNUS
• He is the founder of a non-profit
organisation called the Grameen
Bank. The acting managing
director is Mohammad Shahjahan.
7. Muhammad Yunus
• Muhammad Yunus has shown himself to be a
leader who has managed to translate visions into
practical action for the benefit of millions of people,
not only in Bangladesh, but also in many other
countries.
• He has helped many poor in Bangladesh and also
helped many poor families worldwide.
• It all began from a vision, an inspiration, to help to
serve the needy and the impoverished.
8. Poverty
• Poverty commonly leads to other
problems like hunger, lack of
education, poor health and lack of
shelter.
• Poverty is caused by lack of jobs,
overpopulation and in some countries,
government corruption.
10. What have we
learnt?
• We learnt to be compassionate, to the
impoverished.
• We should always do whatever we can to
help the needy, whether by just offering
them some money for lunch, or even just to
empathise with them.
• Poverty is a serious matter, it could always
lead to other problems. However, we must
do whatever we can to prevent it from
causing other problems.
11. What can we do to help
the poor and needy?
• We can donate to organisations that
help to prevent the spread of poverty.
• We can also pay more attention to the
people in our community. If we see
anyone who needs help, we should try
our best to help and be
compassionate to them
