The Sir John Wilson School held their graduation ceremony on Sunday at the Gulshan Club in Dhaka to celebrate the 11th batch of IGCSE and 4th batch of A Level graduates from the 2015-2016 school year. The minister of Local Government and Rural Development instructed authorities to address water logging in Dhaka during the rainy season. Many lakes in Dhaka had been filled in, preventing water drainage and causing water logging, but the government has recovered many lakes from grabbers with plans to recover remaining lakes within a year. The Rapid Action Battalion arrested 10 people allegedly linked to an armed robbery at a Dutch Bangla Bank ATM booth over 45 days prior. The elite force raided a location and arrested the alleged ringleader, Mohammad Habib Rubel, along with two associates. Rubel is a pickup driver who lived in the area for 13 years and was also involved in scrap business. The force recovered Tk 0.9 million in cash and a pistol. Rubel confessed to involvement and said they were transporting money to hand over to another direct participant. Prolonged noise exposure can cause health issues like stress, hearing loss, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. The European Environment Agency and Noise Abatement Society are seeking solutions to noise problems through the European Soundscape Award.
The 21st International Noise Awareness Day will be observed globally on April 26th to encourage efforts to address noise pollution and promote awareness of the health risks of long-term noise exposure. According to the World Health Organization, noise above 55dB can elevate blood pressure and lead to heart disease, and the WHO recommends noise levels not exceed 40dB. Noise pollution is mainly caused by transportation and machines, and poor urban planning can exacerbate noise in residential areas. Policymakers need to identify cost-effective solutions to primarily reduce noise at its source, such as technological vehicle improvements, infrastructure changes, urban planning, and traffic management techniques.
GPH Ispat Ltd plans to establish the largest modern steel production facility in Chittagong through a joint venture with an Austrian company. The new plant will produce 0.84 million metric tons of billets and 0.64 million metric tons of rebar and sections annually. It will help save foreign exchange and energy costs for Bangladesh while also employing around 10,000 workers and contributing over 2.26 billion taka annually to the government. The managing director expressed hope that the plant will help develop the local and national economy through increased domestic trade, industrial development, tourism, and remittances.
