Purdue¡¯s Perceived Identity&The True Identity
Purdue: What Most People ThinkThe campus of Purdue in its visual state can be very deceiving. What most people would think of this brick-built campus is aged, antique, and possibly boring. They couldn¡¯t be more wrong. What Purdue is really like can be a mystery to anybody who does not attend it. The brick buildings are misleading in that they show age, and although Purdue is old (est. in 1869), the modern features of it are countless. Few colleges have many options to choose from when it comes to computer labs or tutor sessions. A student at Purdue always has an opportunity to use a lab or tutor, based on the vast array available.
New Age built with Old Age in mindThe Neil Armstrong Building on the Purdue campus demonstrates the integrity of the engineering class. The outer structure of it is composed partially of brick, but the majority is composed of glass panes. The glass provides a modern look and the brick provides the old age feel. Not only does the building provide classrooms for engineers and aeronautics students, it also provides a caf¨¦ and lounging area for students needing a break or something quick to eat.
Challenging the False IdentityA building that incorporates the traditional identity of an area with a modern feel is a rare find. As stated earlier, the Neil Armstrong Building does just that. The true identities of Purdue are, but are not limited to, tradition and modern technology. One thing that the Neil Armstrong Building includes abundantly is its distinct features. The interior provides the modern feel that the outside also provides, but adds to that space probes, gadgets, inventions, and innovations in the space industry.
An Appropriate NameNaming the building after Neil Armstrong fits the idea of Purdue being one of the greats. Neil Armstrong was one of the most brilliant astronauts, one of many reasons he became the first man to walk on the Moon.
