Ray Tomlinson invented the "@" symbol and created the first email message in 1971. He came up with the idea of using "@" to separate the username from the domain name in order to route messages between computers. It took him less than a day to invent "@" while working at BBN Technologies. Although Tomlinson is not widely famous, his invention of email including the use of "@" has had a huge impact and become an important part of modern communication.
