Twitter introduced features for the 2014 World Cup that allow users to choose a team to support on their profile, view a timeline of World Cup updates using relevant hashtags, and find and follow participating teams and players. Twitter also brought back hashflags, where including three-letter country codes in tweets displays that country's flag. Twitter hopes these features will increase engagement during the tournament and will tally tweets with hashflags to determine the most popular teams and unveil the "World Cup of Tweets" bracket.
