This document provides information about measuring rainfall using a rain gauge. It discusses the different parts of a rain gauge including a copper cylinder, funnel, and collecting jar. It explains how to properly set up a rain gauge by placing it 1 meter above the ground away from tall structures. Finally, it mentions that rainfall is recorded by taking readings from the collecting jar 45 minutes after rain falls.

10. MEASURING THE AMOUNT OF RAINFALL
In your own thinking ,how is rainfall measured?
There are two parts you need to take care when
measuring rainfall.
1. How to set up the rain gauge before rains come
2. How to record the the reading after the rains
11. MEASURING THE AMOUNT OF RAINFALL
Setting Up a rain gauge
i. Place the copper cylinder in the ground with
30cm projecting above the ground protected by
the outer casing.
ii. Insert the glass jar in the copper cylinder.
iii. Place the funnel with the diameter of 12.7 cm
into the copper cylinder ( see the diagramme from
your cards).

13. PRECAUTIONS WHEN SETTING UP A RAINGAUGE.
How to set up a rain gauge before rainfall is recorded
i. Place rain gauge 1 meter above the ground .
This helps to avoid splashes from the ground.
ii. Its should be positioned away from tall
buildings, trees and other high objects.
These objects can either block the amount of
rainfall to be recorded or the runoff water can be
recorded as well.
iii. Clean the rain gauge before rainfall or after along
drought period.
iv. Take the readings 45 minutes after rain falls.
