Reading the seasons
1. The
Seasons
The Teacher: -Today I want to discuss the seasons of the year. Who can tell
me the names of the four seasons in English?
A Student: -Spring, summer, fall, winter. (raising his hand)
-And when does spring begin?
-Spring begins on March 21 and ends on June 21.
-And summer?
-Summer begins on June 21 and ends on September 21.
-And the fall or autumn?
-What is the difference, Mr. Smith, between the two words fall and
autumn?
-There is no difference. Sometimes we refer to this season of the year as
the fall, other times as the autumn. I believe that the fall is the more
popular term. But when does the fall begin?
-September 21-and it ends on December 21.
-That is correct. And, of course, winter then begins on December 21 and continues
until March 21. Are these seasons always the same everywhere throughout the
world?
- I think it depends upon the climate and the geographical location of a country.
-That's right. In some countries, for example, the summer is a warm season; in other
countries it is a cool season. In still other countries, the tropical countries for
example, the climate changes very little from one season to another, and in these
countries it is almost more correct to say that there are only two seasons, a warm
season and a second season, slightly cooler.
