Tourists have many unique travel options nowadays to make their vacations more extreme and adventurous, such as hiking in remote places or mountain climbing. Festivals around the world also provide unusual experiences, like the wife-carrying championship in Finland where men race while carrying their wives. Some festivals involve throwing food, like the tomato festival in Spain or orange festival in Italy. Unconventional accommodations include hotels made of ice, old planes or trains, or one former US coast guard helicopter.

Unique Trips
1 Tourists have more and more options for
interesting travel these days, and the
choices are more extreme than ever.
Travelers can hike in unusual places, climb
5 mountains, or go rafting on wild rivers.
These types of activities can provide an
experience that you can¡¯t find on a typical
vacation.
If you don¡¯t want physical activity or
10 adventure but you seek a unique experience,
you can go to a festival. There are unusual
ones hosted by local communities around
the world. No matter what your interest,
you¡¯re likely to find something to entertain
15 you.
For example, if you are in Sonkajarvi,
Finland, in July you can watch an unusual
competition called the ¡°World Wife-
Carrying Championships.¡± It¡¯s not difficult
20 to guess what occurs in this event. Husbands
carry their wives in a race! Then there¡¯s
baby-jumping. There really is an event in
Calacho, Spain, where men jump over a line
of babies.
25 There are many food-related festivals
around the world. At most food festivals,
you eat the food, but at some, you throw the
food. In Bu?ol, Spain, people throw
tomatoes in a famous festival. In Ivrea, Italy,
30 it¡¯s oranges. This started long ago, when
young girls threw oranges at possible
boyfriends on a special day. Now everyone
throws them in this festival. In the United
Kingdom, people throw pancakes in the air
35 on Pancake Day.
If your interests are more out of this
world, you could attend the Roswell UFO
Festival, in Roswell, New Mexico. The
theme for this event is aliens and UFOs
40 (unidentified flying objects). The organizers
provide lectures on the topic. There is also
an alien parade and costume competition.
Yes, everyone dresses up as aliens.
As a tourist, you will need a place to
45 stay. Why stay in a hotel when you can stay
in a prison? There are at least five hotels
around the world that were originally jails
but are now hotels. Of course, you¡¯re always
free to check out in the morning! If you like
50 water, there are hotels under water; and
there is more than one hotel made entirely of
ice; or, maybe you¡¯d like to reserve a room
on a train or a plane. There are several hotels
in old planes and trains. One hotel in the
55 United States is in a converted coast guard
helicopter.
So, next time you travel, try something
different. There are so many ways to make
your trip a truly unique experience. What are
60 you waiting for?
