It is a meeting place of the tides of the North Sea and of English Channel. On a clear day, the chalk cliffs of France may be seen from the chalk cliffs of England. They are only about 21 English miles apart. The traffic between two countries is now so great that it has been proposed to do away with the sea passage together. This can only be done by constructing a bridge over the straits, or a tunnel under it. The shallowness of the channel has encourage both English and French engineers in their attempts to provide a new route between England and the continent. Both a bridge and tunnel have been talked about but neither of them has got much further than the laying down of plans. A bridge proposed in 1836 was to have had nearly 200 arches, high enough for vessels to sail under.
