Christopher Columbus discovered Jamaica in 1494 during his exploration voyage from Europe to America. Many of the native Taino people died from diseases brought by the Europeans or were enslaved. Spain then brought African slaves to Jamaica to work on sugar plantations. Britain seized control of Jamaica from Spain in 1655. Jamaica gained independence from Britain in 1962 and is now a popular tourist destination known for its beaches, mountains, and culture including Rastafarian religion.
