The trailer for Sinister 2 establishes conventions of horror films through its use of an isolated house setting and family victims. It depicts the disruption of a normal family through a young boy watching disturbing videos left by the sinister Boogeyman. Elements like cross-cutting between the family and an investigator attempting to help them build tension. Throughout, the audience remains unsure of the Boogeyman's identity and motives as the boy falls prey to him at the trailer's climax.
3. Codes and Conventions
Isolated House the place in which the family lives in this trailer is
isolated and not many people go there. This gives the audience the
impression that the family are left alone to cope with the
boogeyman. It also foreshadows that something bad is going to
happen because there is no one around to help them.
Families Parents and their children are often the victims in horror
films, it makes it more relatable and often scarier as the audience
worry for the children.
4. Mise En Scene
Props old style video camera, the films are that are given to the
young are key to the main plot and they show up quite a lot in the
trailer.
Location Mainly takes places in an abandoned house, it seemed to
be abandoned because people had be killed there.
Costume The boogeyman is dressed in an old dirty suit with matted
hair, he looked decayed and old.The family are wearing normal
clothes, this gives the idea that they are the same as every one else.
5. Camera
Point of view shot This is when the two brothrs are watching the
horror movie. This shows how they think it is harmless to watch.
However, it slightly foreshadows the events that unfold.
Canted angle when the young boy is getting up from bed and
walking towards where the boogeyman is standing, the came is
tracking but it is also at an angle. This gives the idea of him being
sleepy and that he is not aware of his surroundings. The fact that the
boogyman is in the shot, makes the audience nervous and scared for
the boy as we know he hasnt seen him yet.
6. Editing
Cross cutting - In the beginning of the trailer there seems to be two
plots, one with the family in the house which the boogeyman resides
in and the other of a man investigating the story of the boogeyman.
They crossover when the man goes to warn the family about what
might happen. However, it is to late as the boy has already started
watching the videos.
Shot/Reverse-Shot This happens several times during the trailer.
One example is when the boy is watching the video of the other
children's death, this is prolepsis as it shows something bad is going
to happen to the family. Another example is when the man is shining
the torch into the corridor, it shows his reaction to seeing the ghosts
of the children and gives the idea that something is about to jump
out at him.
7. Sound
Digetic When the video is first played, there is music to go along
with it. It starts with children have you ever met the boogeyman, it
is in a happy tune, this is asynchronous as it doesnt fit with the image
of the people being murdered.
Non-digetic When the audience first see the boogeyman appear,
there is non-diegetic sound, it is synchronous as it is high pitch and
makes it seem like something bad is going to happen.
8. TodorovsTheory (Five stages of the narrative)
State of equilibrium normal family life, children want to watch scary
film but their mother wont let them.
Disruption the young boy starts watching the videos and the
boogeyman appears.
Recognition the man appears to tell and warn them about the
boogyman.
Attempt to repair the family tries to run away.
There seems to be no new state of equilibrium in this trailer as it ends
with the young boy in the clutches of the boogeyman.
9. Enigma Codes
Throughout the trailer, the audience never find out:
Who is the boogeyman?
Why is he haunting this house?
Why is the man investigating the boogeyman?
Who dies?
10. Binary Opposites
Innocent vs Sinister the children who are innocent are in contrast
to the boogeyman.
Good vs Evil the man who tries to save the family opposes the
boogeyman.
Dead vs Alive Both dead and alive children are compared.
