Williams was born in 1985 in Auckland, New Zealand to parents John and Lee. He grew up in the Auckland suburb of Mount Albert and attended local primary and intermediate schools. Though his father played rugby league, his mother introduced him to the game. Williams has had success as both a rugby league and rugby union player in New Zealand and Australia, and was selected for the All Blacks national rugby union team in 2010 based on his skills.

He currently plays for Canterbury football Union in the NPC ITM Cup and is expected to play for the Crusaders in the Super Rugby competition. He started his career as a rugby league player with the Canterbury Bulldogs in the Australian National rugby League(NRL). He has represented New Zealand in rugby league. On 17 October 2010, Williams was named in the 2010 All Blacks squad to tour Hong Kong and the Northern Hemisphere He made his All Blacks debut on 6 November against England at Twickenham . In his next match on 13 November, only his second as an international, he won Man of The Match in an All Blacks rout of Scotland.
