Nikolaj Frederik Severin Grundtvig was a highly influential Danish pastor, author, poet, philosopher, historian, teacher and politician in the 19th century. He is considered the ideological father of the folk high school and university systems in Denmark. Grundtvig believed popular education should promote national pride while remaining open-minded, and universities should be strictly focused on universal humanism and science. He promoted values like wisdom, compassion, equality and understanding between people.
