Petra is an ancient city located in southern Jordan that was the capital of the Nabataean Kingdom between the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD. It contains tombs and structures carved into sandstone cliffs and is most famous for Al-Khazneh, an elaborate temple facade known as the Treasury that was carved in the 1st century AD. Petra was rediscovered by Western scholars in 1812 after being described in an 1826 book called Travels in Syria.
