This document provides information about the Stevenson Diplomacy Academy, a one-week program in Boston for high school students to develop their public speaking, writing, and advocacy skills through simulations and practice related to Model UN. The program runs from July 24-31 and includes daily simulations, workshops on skills like resolution writing, and social activities in Boston. Students who complete a research project will have it published and earn the title of Stevenson Youth Fellow. Applications are open until April 15.

APRIL 15 STEVENSON YOUTH FELLOWS Completed research projects will be published in a book to be held at the Stevenson Center in Chicago. Students will earn the title of Stevenson Youth Fellow. JULY 24 JULY 31 APPLICATIONS CLOSE Online applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until April 15, 2016. Mornings will be spent sharpening your diplomacy skills through Model UN practice, afternoons will be spent developing your own academic project. ACADEMY OPENS The Academy will run for one-week in Boston, MA. ACADEMY CLOSES The Academy will close with final presentations and awards. MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY OUR MISSION Model UN is a tremendous analytical vehicle. We view our students passion for their education as the ultimate asset. The Stevenson Diplomacy Academy will not only strengthen the skills needed to win at Model UN competitions, but will challenge students to be better thinkers, writers, and advocates as they develop original thesis projects. STUDENT OBJECTIVES & OUTCOMES Become more confident and competent speakers in structured debated and impromptu speeches Understand how to properly research and structure draft resolutions, committee directives, and private portfolio directives in Model UN simulations Construct an original thesis after exploring subjects of interest Write a fully cited, academic research paper with annotated bibliography for publication USA General Assembly Procedure Daily Speaking Challenge Simulation I: G20 2012 Summit Thesis Construction and Research Moderated and Unmoderated Debate Tactics Daily Debate Challenge Simulation II: World Health Org Guided Research Session Solution Set Construction and Resolution Writing Primary Source Research and Writing Simulation III: Nauruan Parliament
THURSDAY FRIDAY SATURDAY Crisis Committee Strategy and Directive Writing Daily Speaking Challenge Simulation IV: Philippines 2004 Academic Writing Review Session Simulation V: Havana Conference Constructing Annotated Bibliographies Writing Session Academic Poster Creation Chairing Model UN Simulation Workshop Final Project Presentation Walk Through Simulation IV: Special Summit on the South China Sea APPLICATION CRITERIA All applicants must submit the online application before the deadline. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis and once the Academy is full, we will no longer review applications. Strong applicants will have attended at least 3 Model UN conferences and won awards. Strong academic and co-curricular performance is required, as measured by GPA, course load, and co-curricular leadership. Applicants are encouraged to tell their original story and explain why they should be admitted. EXPLORING BOSTON After long days of researching, writing, and debate practice, we plan to take full advantage of our host city of Boston! Here are some of the social activities that we have planned for our students: Shopping on Newbury Street Exploring Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market Going to Fenway Park to watch a Red Sox Game Walking the famous Freedom Trail Taking a boat cruise to the Boston Harbor Islands Touring Harvard Square Dates and Logistics Applications Open.............January 5 Applications Close ................April 15 Deposit Due.......................March 15 Full Payment Due .................April 30 Academy........................
