The Civil War began in 1861 after Confederates fired on Union troops at Fort Sumter and lasted for four years. Nearly 620,000 soldiers died in the war, about 500,000 were wounded. Abraham Lincoln became president in 1860 and was assassinated in 1865. General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant, ending the war. Lee had previously served in the U.S. Army but resigned to lead the Confederate army instead due to his loyalty to Virginia.
