2. The first ever movie made was 1897 by Georges Méliès and ever since then, movies
have been a good source of entertainment. This causes a great production of movies. Hence,
new movies are produced monthly. Some movies gain millions of viewers such as
Transformers, Iron Man and many more whereas some movies only gain a few thousand
viewers. Genres are what producers use to distinguish the type of movie they produce.
However, movies that belong under the same genre does not necessarily mean they have the
same story line but nonetheless carry a few similarities. Nowadays, musical films such as the
Sound of Music and High School Musical have different story line but they both have similar
traits in the story and are portrayed by the characters such as love triumphs in the end, ability
to accept some changes can make life better, the usage of choreography dancing and singing
and contains some comedic scenes.
First and foremost, in both movies, love can conquer any challenges faced by the main
characters. In the Sound of music, Maria who is a governess of seven children to a widower,
Georg von Trapp who is the head of the von Trapp family and fell hopelessly in love with Georg
.This caused Maria to run away from the household and back to the chapel to prevent a
commotion. After, returning and receiving advice from the Reverend Mother, she returned
back to the von Trapp family and confirmed that Georg was also in love with her, hence Georg
cancelled his previous engagement to be with Maria. In High School Musical, Troy Bolton who
is a basketball player fell in love with the new transfer student called Gabriella Montez who
he met during his vacation. Their mutual feelings was not approved by their friends and they
set them up to end the friendship. Their friends soon realise the mistake they have made and
tried their best to get them back together. After much effort, they got back together and
successfully completing all their challenges together. Both movies show that regardless of the
issues they may have faced, in the end, love overcomes everything.
Secondly, both of the movies show their willingness to accept change after realising it
makes life better. Maria thought the way the Georg educates and dress his children is
inappropriate hence, she decided to take matters into her own hands and make a few
adjustments to his children life style along with their attire. At first, Georg disagree with the
new life style but after hearing how well his own children can sing and how happy they are of
their new lives are and he finally accepts the new life style. Troy’s friends did not approve of
his singing as they said it disrupts the status quo. Looking at Troy’s bravery, other people
began revealing their hidden talents. After realising their mistakes, they soon started
accepting the change in Troy’s life style and supported him whole heartedly. This portrays
that in both movies willingly accept changes in their lives.
Thirdly, both musical have choreographed dances. For example, in the Sound of Music,
when Maria begun teaching the children the basics of music, she began singing the song “Do-
Re-Mi”. They eventually picked up the song and started dancing around the mountain top
while singing the song Do-Re-Mi. Besides that, they have also had danced to the song “So
long, Farewell”. In High School musical, nearly every song had a choreographed dance moves.
For example, “Get’cha head in the game”, “Stick to the Status Quo” and “We’re all in this
together”. These are one of the similarities I can obtain from both of the musical videos I have
watched as well as researched on.
3. Lastly, both musicals contain a number of comedic scenes during the movie. For
example, in the Sounds of Music, after the nuns sung the song “How do you solve a problem
like Maria”. Maria came rushing into the chapel and when she saw the group of elder nuns
staring at her, she immediately gave up and just walked away. Another example is when Maria
brought the Georg von Trapp’s children out for a boat ride and when she saw the captain
(Georg), she wanted to greet the captain but accidentally fell down into the lake dragging the
children along with her. In High School musical, there also several comedic scenes in the
movie. For starters, after completing the song “The start of something new”. Troy and
Gabriella begun talking and decided to exchange phone numbers, when the new year arrived,
Gabriella walked off without a notice and left Troy talking to himself. In addition, nearing the
end of the movie, before they began singing the song “We’re all in this together”. Troy and
Gabriella were about to have their first kiss but sadly was disrupted by Troy’s childhood friend,
Chad as he cut in between the two love birds.
In conclusion, The Sound of Music and High school Musical are similar in many ways as
love triumphs in the end, the characters accept some changes to make life better, both of the
movies contain choreographed dancing and singing and both movies contain some comedic
scenes.
