Brain Development - Early childhood
Creativity, Empathie & Cognition
Theory of mind is the cognitive ability to attribute mental states such as beliefs, intents, desires, emotions and knowledge to oneself and others. It allows people to understand and predict behavior. Children develop theory of mind abilities at different stages - at 1 year old they recognize emotions, between 2-3 years they identify simple mental states in others, and by age 4 they understand mental states can differ between individuals. Between 6-7 years, children learn that others' thoughts are influenced by circumstances, and recursive reasoning emerges by age 12 where they understand complex mental state attribution. Theory of mind conditions how we relate to other people.
The document provides an overview of theory of mind, including its definition, importance, levels of development, relationship to language and executive function, and approaches to teaching it. Theory of mind refers to the ability to understand others' mental states and perspectives. It develops through childhood in stages from understanding desires to understanding false beliefs. Deficits in theory of mind are linked to autism and can explain social and communication challenges.
The document discusses theory of mind, including:
1) Defining theory of mind as the ability to infer mental states like beliefs, desires, intentions in oneself and others and understand they may differ.
2) The two main theories of how theory of mind develops are the theory-theory, which proposes it is based on learned folk psychology, and simulation theory, which suggests imagining oneself in another's perspective.
3) Theory of mind develops through childhood, starting with imitation and joint attention, then understanding knowledge, beliefs, and later false beliefs around ages 3-5. Neuroimaging research implicates temporal pole, medial prefrontal cortex, and posterior superior temporal sulcus in theory of mind.
Baron-Cohen et al. (1997) studied theory of mind (ToM) in autistic adults and those with Tourette's syndrome compared to neurotypical adults. Participants completed an eyes test identifying mental states from photographs of eyes. Autistic adults scored significantly lower than the other groups. Neurotypical females scored higher than males. The study provided further evidence that a core deficit of autism is lack of advanced ToM skills, even in higher-functioning individuals.
Social Thinking & Theory of Mind: Putting it all togetherBilinguistics

You will find out what Social Thinking is, what Theory of Mind (ToM) is, and how they are related. You will learn what skills must be in place so ToM can develop. You will also will be able to list and describe various social communicators, and select appropriate therapeutic interventions.
The document contains a selection of stories designed to test understanding of mental states and social situations. The stories cover topics like pretending, joking, white lies, figures of speech, irony, misunderstandings, forgetting, and making logical deductions based on limited information provided. Each story is followed by one or more questions to probe the reader's comprehension of why the characters said or did certain things.

Freud's theory of mind proposes that the mind is divided into three parts:
1) The id, the unconscious part that seeks immediate gratification of basic desires and impulses.
2) The ego, the conscious decision-making part that balances the id's impulses with reality.
3) The superego, which incorporates societal morals and values, causing feelings of guilt when one's actions are morally wrong.

This document discusses childhood disorders and communicating with children. It covers conduct disorder, separation anxiety disorder, mental retardation, and autism. For conduct disorder, it discusses symptoms and biological, psychological, and social theories. It notes that children with separation anxiety disorder often have an anxious attachment style. Theories of mental retardation and autism are also presented, including genetic and neurological factors. The document concludes with discussing Piaget's stages of child development and techniques for age-appropriate communication with children.

This document discusses the brain and mind training. It covers topics like maintaining a healthy brain, the effects of substances like alcohol and drugs, and different states of mind marked by different brain wave patterns (beta, alpha, theta, delta). It includes exercises to experience mindfulness, make decisions, reflect on patterns of resistance, and use techniques like mirror neurons and emotional freedom technique to change neuronal pathways and beliefs. The overall message is on training the mind for benefits like reducing anxiety, regulating emotions, and developing concentration and self-awareness.
This document provides information about autism spectrum disorders, including the diagnostic criteria for autism as defined by the DSM-IV. It also outlines several classroom strategies that can be used, such as visual schedules, social stories, the 5 point scale, comic strip conversations, and power cards. Examples of each strategy are provided. Additionally, the document lists curriculum materials and resources about autism.

Leon Wurfel evaluated claims that dual n-back brain training can increase IQ scores. He conducted dual n-back training over 20 sessions, finding it very difficult. Of 12 participants, only 2 completed the training. These 2 participants saw IQ increases of 14 and 9 points respectively. While the training was hard, Wurfel concluded it was worth it due to potential lifelong cognitive benefits even from small IQ increases.

The document provides an overview of the basic parts and functions of the human brain. It discusses the major lobes of the cerebrum including the frontal, parietal, temporal and occipital lobes and their responsibilities. It also outlines the key components of the brain stem including the medulla oblongata, pons and midbrain. The document then covers the diencephalon and its structures like the thalamus, hypothalamus, pineal gland and pituitary gland. It concludes with a brief discussion of traumatic brain injuries and concussions, noting the differences between them and providing examples.
The document discusses autism, including that it affects many families worldwide, impacts those involved emotionally, and is increasing in prevalence. It notes autism's importance as a topic that most people know someone with the disorder. The document provides information on autism symptoms, diagnosis, possible causes, treatments, and perspectives from authors like Jenny McCarthy and Temple Grandin. It also discusses the autism spectrum and different conditions under the umbrella of autism disorders.
