The Employee Location Management System (ELMS) is a web-based application that enables organisations to quickly locate their employees and respond effectively in an emergency. In the event of an incident such as a terrorist attack, civil unrest or an environmental disaster, ELMS helps organisations identify those who are safe, and focus attention on those who are in need of assistance or unaccounted for. ELMS offers an overview of all employees within an organisation, not just travelling staff. Through the use of the internet and the latest technology, ELMS centralises employee information and security processes. Where accounting for staff may have taken days using traditional methods such as spread- sheets, emails and phone numbers, ELMS collapses timeframes. ELMS demonstrates an organisations commitment to duty of care. It offers employers peace of mind, while employees can feel confident that their organisation has a tangible process in place for overseeing their safety. Few people want to be tracked. With this principle in mind, ELMS was designed to enable employees to update their own location status. USA: Hurricane Katrina devastates the Atlantic coast of America. It is the costliest natural disaster in US history. At least 1,836 people die. Iceland: A volcanic eruption sends clouds of ash soaring 11,000 meters high, disrupting air traffic in Northern Europe. USA: 9/11. A terrorist attack strikes New York City. 2,996 people lose their lives. Global air traffic is heavily affected as thousands of flights are cancelled and communications are disrupted for days. UK: Suicide bombers attack the London transport system in a co-ordinated strike that targets civilians during rush hour. The bombings claim 56 lives and injure over 700 people. Global Incident Map
- 8. New Zealand: The city of Christ- church is severely damaged by an earthquake that kills 185 people. A state of emergency is declared; flights in and out of the country are suspended, leaving thousands of people stranded in airports. Japan: An earthquake strikes the north-east coast of Japan, triggering a massive tsunami that devastates the region. Thousands of people are killed and many more have to be evacuated transportation, infrastructure and communications collapse. Brisbane: Massive floods sweep through Brisbane and the surrounding areas. The disaster claims 60 lives, while more than 20,000 homes and businesses are destroyed. Greece: Riots in Greece escalate. Protesters set fire to buildings and loot shops in response to government austerity measures. Bahrain: Demonstrations held to secure greater political freedoms and human rights are met with police force. A state of emergency is declared. Thousands of businessmen are trapped in the country while international communication channels are closed.
- 9. HOW IT WORKS ELMS is an easy-to-use and simple to manage web-based system. It features a dashboard that enables Security Managers, HR depart- ments and management to view the location and safety status of all staff. This online platform acts as a portal through which staff can communicate with their management team during a crisis. Employees are able to manually update their own safety status, location and itinerary online, through SMS, or smartphone applications. Security Managers and administrators can then view location data on a digital map, and be kept notified of any change in the location or safety status of an employee. ELMS is a user-led system which allows employees to be in control of their own location data. ELMS also enables those responsible for employee safety to monitor and audit an employees compliance with security policies. For example, ELMS can monitor how often staff update their safety status and read security notifications.
