1. Dr. Mirko Wormuth (LL.M., Harvard Law School)
A journey to America
After Nanjing and graduating from law
school in Germany, Mirko had won a
scholarship to attend a Master of Law
program at the prestigious Harvard Law
School. The program admitted every
year 150 legal experts from all
continents. This one year allowed Mirko
to understand the American legal
system, study Chinese law in more
depth at Harvards China law center
under Professor William Alford and
spend lots of time with the best young
legal minds from all over the world.
Many of them became friends that Mirko
is still in touch with until now. In the end
of the year, Mirko also passed the New
York Bar and is permitted to practice
law in the state of New York.
to budding entrepreneurs and young
managers are Jim Collins and Marcus
Buckingham. Most of their books can be
found on Chinas Amazon or Dangdang in
Chinese translation. However, the book that
had the most impact on his own fashion
business is Mastering the Rockefeller
Habits from Verne Harnish. The author is
also the founder of the global entrepreneurs
network Entrepreneurs Organization with
local chapters around the world. Mirko has
been a member of the Beijing chapter of EO
since 2008. He has also been its
membership chair, event chair and
president. Besides his strong involvement in
local entrepreneurship in China, he is a
sought-after speaker at international retail
and fashion symposiums where he presents
on a number of different topics ranging from
digital trends in retail to customer
satisfaction as well as recruitment and
retention techniques. However, as many in
the company know his favorite topic is
company culture. In an increasingly
competitive environment it is the cultural
DNA of a company that can provide a
lasting advantage but most importantly can
create an environment where people feel
safe and challenged at the same time.
Personal and professional growth of his
people is what is most dear to Mirkos
heart. Everyone in his team is encouraged
to have a big and audacious goal and leave
a memorable legacy that can be seen and
felt many years later. Money is important but
helping other people grow is more so.
Mirkos love a鍖air with China
began in 1992. At that time he
was a 2nd year law school
student at Hamburg University
in Germany. One day he came
across a very enticing
scholarship program that
promised a one year stay at
Nanjing University to learn
Chinese.
Mirko immediately applied and went
through a series of interviews and
language tests. When he was
eventually admitted to the program,
only ten out of hundreds of applicants
had been accepted. This one year in
Nanjing left an indelible impression on
the young law student.
In 1999 Mirko came back to China as a
PhD student. His task was to examine
Chinas evolving bankruptcy laws and
regulation, especially the new draft of a
national uni鍖ed Bankruptcy Law. He
spent two years reading hundreds of
Chinese law books and articles
interviewing countless law professors
as well as judges and lawyers. In 2002
he published his book in Germany and
became a Doctor of Law of the
University of Hamburg School of Law.
After graduation he became a lawyer
and worked for a large international law
鍖rm in Beijing and Hong Kong before
he became an entrepreneur. His area of
expertise is corporate law and foreign
direct investment in the PR China.
He spent an entire year at the German-
Chinese Institute for Economic Law at
Nanjing University where he wrote articles
for the law magazine on Chinas new
Advertisement Law and the Consumer
Protection Law. Going back to Germany at
the end of the year was one of the hardest
decisions ever. But he needed to complete
his law degree in Germany. In any event,
coming back to China was only a matter of
time.
Mirko was born in East Germany in 1970. In
other words he grew up in a socialist
country governed by a communist party. Its
also for this reason that he often feels a
strong af鍖nity towards his Chinese friends.
As a young boy Mirko loved soccer. Over
the years this hobby of his intensi鍖ed. When
he was 13 he trained in a professional club
almost daily with league games on the
weekend. At one point his family needed to
make the decision whether Mirko should
become a professional soccer player or
focus on school instead. In the end his
mum convinced him that school and
university were better goals. So he turned to
books and became an avid reader and very
good student. Until this date, Mirko is
reading daily soaking up new knowledge
and learning about the latest business
trends and management techniques. The
executive team in TWICE under his
leadership have reading assignments as
well. New ideas are being discussed and
evaluated for use in the business. His
