There are five types of conflicts: 1) internal conflicts involve a struggle within a character's conscience; 2) external conflicts involve a struggle between a character and elements of nature; 3) external conflicts involve a struggle between two characters; 4) external conflicts involve a struggle between a character and societal rules or laws; 5) supernatural conflicts involve a struggle with ghosts, monsters, or things not of this world.

better paying job.
5. An EXTERNAL conflict that
involves a struggle between
the character and the
elements of nature that are
beyond his/her control.
Example: A man is stalked by
a wild animal in the forest.
6. An EXTERNAL conflict that
involves a struggle, mental
or physical, between two
characters in the story.
Example: Two little boys get
into a fistfight.
7. An EXTERNAL conflict that
involves the struggle
between a character and the
rules or laws that govern the
society in which he/she
lives.
Example: A teenager breaks
the curfew set by his
parents.
8. A character has a problem
with ghosts, monsters, or
things not of this world.

Example: A child thinks
that his house is haunted...
