Listening Skill
One of the important skills in learning a language is listening. Listening is the act of
internalizing information and it usually involves outcomes. Listening requires you to
focus on key points and process the information.
Some tips on good listening:
 Be focussed and attentive.
 Note the inflection of voice of the speakers; different pitches of voice reflect
different importance of what is being spoken.
 In face-to-face interaction, note the facial expressions and gestures of the
speaker, this help to be more engaged in the interaction and hence, improves
your listening skill.
 Minimize the noises that interrupt your listening. These noises can be in
forms of people talking, sounds of machines, cars, music or any other form of
audio. Your physical condition can also be a form of noises. When you are
highly overwhelmed with a condition or an emotion, it is likely that you are
not able to listen well.
 Ask questions if you are unsure of what has been said.
In listeningfor academicpurposes,there are severalsteps that youneed to take. These
steps are:
 Identify the need or the objective of your listening activity
 Concentrate on the content of the text
 Identify the main idea(s) of the text
 Pay attention to transition words. Transition words help you to identify the
sequence of information or the relationship between one idea and another
 Use contextual clues if you are not sure of the meaning of unfamiliar words
