The human ear is a complex organ responsible for two primary functions: hearing and balance. Its anatomical structure is divided into three main sections: the outer ear, middle ear, and inner ear. Each section plays a critical role in capturing, transmitting, and processing sound waves into electrical signals that the brain interprets as sound.
1. Outer Ear
The outer ear collects sound waves from the environment and channels them toward the middle ear. It consists of:
Pinna (Auricle)
The visible external part of the ear.
Acts as a funnel to direct sound waves into the ear canal.
Helps in sound localization by amplifying specific frequencies.
External Auditory Canal
A tube-like structure that extends from the pinna to the tympanic membrane (eardrum).

2. Middle Ear
The middle ear is an air-filled cavity located within the temporal bone. It amplifies and transmits sound vibrations from the tympanic membrane to the inner ear. Key components include:
Ossicles
Three tiny bonesthe malleus (hammer), incus (anvil), and stapes (stirrup)form a chain that transmits vibrations.
o Malleus: Attached to the tympanic membrane.
o Incus: Connects the malleus and stapes.
o Stapes: The smallest bone in the body; its footplate fits into the oval window of the cochlea.
These bones amplify sound by approximately 20 times.
Eustachian Tube
A narrow canal connecting the middle ear to the nasopharynx.
Equalizes air pressure on both sides of the tympanic membrane, ensuring optimal vibration.
Opens briefly during swallowing or yawning.
Oval Window and Round Window
The stapes transmits vibrations to the oval window, which leads to fluid movement in the cochlea.
The round window compensates for pressure changes within the cochlea.
3. Inner Ear
The inner ear, also known as the labyrinth, is a fluid-filled structure housed within the temporal bone. It contains sensory organs for hearing (cochlea) and balance (vestibular system).
Cochlea
A spiral-shaped, snail-like structure responsible for hearing.
Divided into three chambers:
o Scala Vestibuli: Contains perilymph fluid; receives vibrations from the oval window.
o Scala Media (Cochlear Duct): Contains endolymph fluid and houses the organ of Corti.
o Scala Tympani: Contains perilymph fluid; ends at the round window.
The basilar membrane within the cochlea varies in stiffness along its length:
o High-frequency sounds are detected at its base (near oval window).
o Low-frequency sounds are detected at its apex.

05/22/2018 CHICAGO A woman is suing Dr. Geoffrey Fenner and Fenner Plastic Surgery & Medical Spa in Illinois for alleged medical malpractice.
Elizabeth Healy filed a complaint on May 15 in Cook County Circuit Court in Chicago, Illinois, alleging the defendants failed to provide her with proper medical care.
According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges the defendants performed a rhinoplasty, septoplasty and a turbinectomy on her in 2016. As a result of the procedures, she claims she now suffers from empty nose syndrome, difficulty breathing and several other medical conditions. The plaintiff holds the defendants responsible for allegedly failing inform her of the risks and consequences of the procedures.
David A. Axelrod
The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks judgment in an amount greater than $50,000, plus the costs of the suit. She is represented by David A. Axelrod, Jason M. Kleinman and Mav D. Marion of David A. Axelrod & Associates PC in Chicago.
