Acute tubular necrosis (ATN) is a condition where the renal tubules are damaged by toxins or lack of oxygen, commonly caused by medications, contrast dyes, or liver/kidney diseases like diabetes. Blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine tests measure kidney function by detecting waste products that kidneys normally remove from the blood. Chronic renal failure involves a slow loss of kidney function over time which can lead to end-stage renal disease requiring dialysis or transplant if left untreated.
