Editor's Notes

  • #8: This matches the Introduction to genre switch videos: Explain section of the Presentation plan. Say this: Do me a favor: Imagine your favorite movie. What genre is it? A light-on-your-feet rom com? A film noir you are, if youre being honest, still trying to understand? Now I want you to re-imagine that film as an entirely different genre. That rom com? Im sorry to inform you, but its a comic book flick now. That film noir? Yep, they got a big name, big budget director to remake it and it is officially a buddy movie. Except, this is kind of a weird remake. Theyre not going to reshoot anything. Instead, theyll change the way theyre telling the tale by recording new narration for it, giving it a new soundtrack, and shuffling around the order in which scenes, characters, and lines of dialogue are presented and delivered. Thats genre switching. Genre switching is a fantastic way to teach students important elements of craft like narrative, point of view, tone, and theme through a creative lens. Why? Because in order to successfully genre switch, students will need to first understand their chosen narrative, deconstruct the elements of craft that make it the story that it is, and then remix those elements. You cant break any rules without knowing what they are first, right? Youve probably guessed this for yourself by now, but genre switching is something that happens primarily through editing and revision, so its great at teaching students how to do that both at the ideas level, and in terms of the technical skills theyll need to get it done. In order to communicate their knowledge and ideas, theyll have to get good at switching plots and curating, collecting, and ordering imagery and music. Theyll also have to marshal a deep understanding of what the visual and auditory elements that theyre employing mean and do. Theyll have to be good digital citizens as they go. And of course, theyll need to collaborate closely with their classmates to make all of this happen. This will all make a lot more sense when we watch a few genre switch videos ourselves. Thats rightmovies in class, and no substitute teacher in sight. As we watch these clips, keep an eye out for the many craft elements that have been twisted in order to make the switch. Take note of these elements as you watch." "You can use your Video observationhandout to track what you're seeing. Do this: Refer to the points on the screen. Hold up the Video observation handout. • #12: This slide matches with thePlanning a genre switch video: Explainsection of the Presentation plan. Say this: There are a fewthingsto consider when planning for a genre switch video. First, in order to be good digital citizens, its a good idea to pick stories that are in the public domain,or, narratives that are perceived to belong to the public. Fairy tales and fables are good examples because theyve been freely adapted by lots of different creators. But beforewe getinto exactly what that means,I want to give you a more concrete idea of what the process of planning for a genre switch video might look like. First things first: Well want to start by summarizing the original story. "This will give us a good sense of what we're working with." "Then we'll want to consider the characteristics of the new genre." "For instance, if we decide we want to switch the original into a horror film, what makes a horror film a horror film?" "Once we have that down, we can write the new story in our new genre." "We'll storyboard it so we're speaking the language of film." "We'll find images to use as we create the story." "And then, we'll import those images into the Photos app. Note that we could also use video footage that we film ourselves for our genre switch videos, rather than still images that we put together into a bigger video. In fact, youll probably want to go this route should you decide to use genre videos as a teaching tool in your classroom. But due to time restrictions in this course, were going to stick to using images for now. Rest assured that the editing tools we use today are very similar when applied to videos.
