So what does this mean?
Less cation exchange capacity.
Less biological surface area.
And occasionally worse plant
anchoring.
All of which lead to less
efficient growth
Okay… so are smaller
aggregates better?
Well… those can cause
trouble too.
Smaller aggregates have
minimized pore space.
This captures and holds
more organic matter.
...the plant roots can get
smothered and choked by too
much organic matter.
Which means...
This causes oxygen levels to
drop in the solution & media
I.e. - Anaerobic zones
(Which are bad.)

been waiting for...
Why are fibers for
aquaponic media better?
Fibers have massive
surface area
This means more beneficial
biological activity can occur.
Fibers also have great percolation.
Great what?
Percolation: The ability of the
solution (water) to move through
the media.
Better percolation means the solution moves
through the fiber quickly and easily, and solids
get broken up better.
Flow rates, nutrient distribution, and
oxygen rates are better.
And that’s why fibers are superior
media for aquaponic production!
