 Assessment Title: The Word

The purpose of this assignment is to:
Introduce students to the basic elements of graphic design
Develop their perceptual and representative abilities
Demonstrate their understanding of the work of others through application of research
Demonstrate their ability to plan and develop visual ideas
Encourage students to develop creative, expressive, interesting outcomes

Scenario: You are to produce an image suitable for use in the NRC 2013 calendar

In recent years we have based the theme for NRC Calendar on the NRC brands’ three core values:
Aspire – Aim – Achieve

The theme of the NRC 2013 calendar will be “Belong” The calendar will be produced by Belfast
design agency McCadden, who will choose 12 images to be used in the calendar.

Your proposal can be computer generated, photographic, collaged, 2D or deep relief, or mixed media
of your choice. You must remember that the calendar is a 2D production, so 3D interpretations must
work as a photograph of your finished piece. Your emphasis should be on producing an imaginative
proposal, so be inventive and try to avoid hackneyed, trite or over used imagery.

Your work must fit an image area required by the McCadden design agency, although you can work to
larger sizes that have the same proportions as the size requested.
Task 1 This provides evidence for Unit 1, P1, P5
                                                                         Unit 2, P3

Provide a dictionary definition of the word “Belong”

Task 2 This provides evidence for Unit 1, P1, P2, P3, P4, P6
                                                                         Unit 2, P3

Brainstorm with your Tutor and fellow students what this word means to you and to other people

Task 3 This provides evidence for Unit 1, P2, P3, P4, P5
                                                                         Unit 2, P3

Research the work of graphic designers who may influence your design idea

Task 4 This provides evidence for Unit 1, P2, P3, P4
                                                                         Unit 2, P3

Identify your target audience

Task 5 This provides evidence for Unit 1, P1, P8
                                                                         Unit 2, P1, P2, P3, P4, P7

Produce initial ideas as “thumbnail” sketches based on the theme, with research & development
ideas in your artist’s journal

Task 6 This provides evidence for Unit 1, P1, P6, P7, P8
                                                                         Unit 2, P1, P2, P3, P4, P5, P6, P7

After discussion with your Tutor, refine your ideas and present them as “Client Roughs” that show an
accurate representation of your ideas, with research & development of ideas, materials & techniques
in your artist’s journal

Task 7 This provides evidence for Unit 1, P7

                                                                          Unit 2, P3, P4, P6, P8
