Assessment Title: The Word
The purpose of this assignment is to:
Introduce students to the basic elements of graphic design
Develop their perceptual and representative abilities
Demonstrate their understanding of the work of others through application of research
Demonstrate their ability to plan and develop visual ideas
Encourage students to develop creative, expressive, interesting outcomes
Scenario: You are to produce an image suitable for use in the NRC 2013 calendar
In recent years we have based the theme for NRC Calendar on the NRC brands’ three core values:
Aspire – Aim – Achieve
The theme of the NRC 2013 calendar will be “Belong” The calendar will be produced by Belfast
design agency McCadden, who will choose 12 images to be used in the calendar.
Your proposal can be computer generated, photographic, collaged, 2D or deep relief, or mixed media
of your choice. You must remember that the calendar is a 2D production, so 3D interpretations must
work as a photograph of your finished piece. Your emphasis should be on producing an imaginative
proposal, so be inventive and try to avoid hackneyed, trite or over used imagery.
Your work must fit an image area required by the McCadden design agency, although you can work to
larger sizes that have the same proportions as the size requested.
