Horror films often use isolated settings like small towns, forests, or abandoned buildings to make characters feel alone and increase fear in audiences. Effective use of sound is also important in horror - non-diegetic music can set atmosphere while diegetic sounds can build tension. Common props that symbolize horror include religious symbols, weapons, masks, and things related to paranormal activity or forensic investigations.
