"Zorba the Greek"
The legendary syrtaki composed by Mikis Theodorakis
From its introduction, from the very first notes, it reminds all people of
Greece. It starts at a slow pace and accelerates as it progresses,
remaining unchanged over time and standing out among our countless
artistic legacies. It is the Zorba's dance, the one and only syrtaki,
written by Mikis Theodorakis and included in the album "Zorba the
Greek", which was the soundtrack of the movie "Alexis Zorbas".
The film, awarded with three Oscars, is based on the book "Zorbas" by
Nikos Kazantzakis. With the release of the film, the song became known
all over the world, while various musicians from all countries and from
all genres of music adapted it, giving it a place in many music charts
worldwide. The dance is also known as "Zorba the Greek Dance Syrtaki".
Syrtaki is a mixture of elements from Greek traditional dances. Its name
is not accidental, as the word "syrtaki" comes from the word "syrtos?
which is a designation used for a group of traditional dances in which
dancers drag their feet. However, the sirtaki combines the syrto dance
with the dance that includes frequent, small and very fast bounces of the
legs, in its fastest part. And that is what makes it unique. The dancers
form a line or circle and hold the shoulder of their neighbor while
dancing. It is not easy for everyone to endure until the end of the piece.
As the pace goes up so much, the steps get faster and faster; so fast
that it takes a very good physical condition to be able to cope.
