Leonardo da Vinci painted portraits of wealthy patrons in the Renaissance that showcased innovative techniques. He painted La Belle Ferroniere as the wife of the Duke of Milan and The Lady with the Ermine as his mistress, Cecilia Gallerani. Both portraits depicted the sitters' personalities through their poses and expressions and used sfumato technique to blend tones softly. The ermine in Cecilia's portrait symbolized both her virtue and connection to the Duke.
