Dissatisfied with sociological theories of professionalism, I came to view institutions such as the AIA and RIBA as crucial points in the support of considered architectural practice. Professionalism is not a process but an affect, and its formalization is necessary to avoid short-sighted and deleterious acquiescence to non-disciplinary demands or constraints.
