Within 3 days of the Bhopal gas leak over 8,000 people had died and hundreds of thousands were injured or sickened. The leak occurred at a Union Carbide pesticide plant in Bhopal, India in 1984 when a highly toxic gas, methyl isocyanate, escaped from the factory in a dense white cloud. Survivors described waking up coughing and struggling to breathe as the gas filled their homes. Today, over 50,000 people who were exposed still suffer severe respiratory and other health problems. The disaster was not an accident but resulted from Union Carbide deliberately ignoring safety measures to cut costs. The environment around the plant was also extensively and long-term damaged due to improper clean up.
2. The worlds worst industrial disaster took place in
Bhopal 24 years ago.Union Carbide {UC} an
American company had a factory in the city in
which it produced pesticides. At midnight on 2nd
December 1984 methyl-isocyanite (mic)-a highly
poisonous gas started leaking from this plant
3. One of the survivor says
At about 12.30 am I woke up to the sound of
my baby coughing badly . In the half-light I
saw that the room was filled with a white
cloud . I heard people shouting run,,,run
Then I started coughing , with each breath
seeming as if I was breathing in fire . My eyes
were burning.

4. DEATH TROLL OF THE DISASTER
Within 3 days more than 8000 people were dead .
Hundreds of thousands were maimed. Most of
those were exposed to the poison gas came from
poor,working-class families of which nearly
50000 people are today too sick to work.Among
those who survived,many developed severe
respiratory disorders,eye problems and othe
disorders.Children developed pecular
abmormalities, like the girl in the photo.
5. Is it an accident or done
intentionally??
The disaster was not an accident . UC had
deliberately ignored the essential safety
measures in order to cut costs . Much before
the Bhopal disaster , there had been incidents
of gas leak killing a worker and injuring
several.
6. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
The Bhopal gas leak caused extensive damage to
the environment surrounding the Union Carbide
factory. The impacts were both immediate and
long-term. Due to improper clean up in the
area, Bhopal residents are still affected by the
negative consequences of the gas leak.
