NIGERIAN GINGER
AND STATE AREAS
Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is a flowering plant whose rhizome, ginger root or
ginger, is widely used as a spice and a folk medicine.[2] It is
a herbaceous perennial which grows annual pseudostems (false stems made
of the rolled bases of leaves) about one meter tall bearing narrow leaf
blades. The inflorescences bear flowers having pale yellow petals with purple
edges, and arise directly from the rhizome on separate shoots.[3]
Ginger is produced in six states of the federation namely-Kaduna, Nasarawa,
Benue, Niger, Bauchi and Gombe. Kaduna is the largest producer, accounting
for about 50 per cent of Nigeria's total harvest. It is followed by Gombe, and
Bauchi, then Benue, Nasarawa and Niger states.

With a projected average yield of 17.5t per hectare and a minimum of 2,000
ha of land, a minimum of 35,000 t of fresh ginger can be set as the initial
production target per year.
